Log fire burning on a grate inside a firebrick-lined open fireplace

Firebox and Smoke Chamber Repair in Denver

We replace cracked firebrick, repoint joints with refractory mortar and parge rough smoke chambers smooth. Typical range in the Denver area is $300 to $2,500.

The firebox is the brick box where the fire burns. The smoke chamber is the sloped space just above the damper that funnels smoke into the flue. Both take the most heat in the whole chimney, and both wear out first. Firebrick cracks, mortar joints wash out, and in many older Denver fireplaces the smoke chamber was built as stepped, rough brick that collects creosote.

Gaps in either one let heat reach parts of the house that were never meant to get hot. Denver has about 61,000 homes built in 1939 or earlier, and a fireplace that old has usually had a lot of fires. Small firebrick or joint repairs run about $300 to $1,000, parging a smoke chamber about $800 to $2,000, and a firebox rebuild about $1,000 to $2,500.

Signs you need this

  • Cracked, loose or missing firebrick
  • Mortar joints in the firebox that are hollow or gone
  • Brick pieces falling onto the grate
  • An inspection photo showing a rough, stepped smoke chamber
  • Heavy creosote buildup right above the damper

How we do it

  1. Inspect from the firebox upAt the free inspection we check every firebrick and joint, then look past the damper into the smoke chamber with a light. A camera scan, if needed, is priced first.
  2. Remove the failed materialCracked firebrick and loose mortar come out cleanly, with the room and hearth covered.
  3. Rebuild with refractory materialsNew firebrick goes in with refractory mortar, the heat-rated kind, not regular mortar that cracks in a fire.
  4. Parge the smoke chamberWe trowel a heat-rated coating over the stepped brick to make it smooth and sealed, which also makes future sweeping easier.

Why does the smoke chamber matter?

Smoke slows down and swirls in a rough, stepped chamber, so creosote collects in the corners. Gaps there also let heat and gases reach the framing around the chimney. Parging fills the gaps and leaves a smooth, sloped surface that drafts better and is easier to clean.

Can I use the fireplace with a few cracked firebricks?

Hairline cracks in a firebrick face are normal and not urgent. Bricks that are loose, missing or cracked through, or joints you can push a coin into, are a reason to stop using the fireplace until they are repaired. We show you photos and tell you which group yours falls in.

Is this worth doing if I may switch to gas or an insert?

Possibly not all of it. A sealed gas insert or an EPA-certified wood insert sits inside the firebox with its own liner, so some smoke chamber work may not be needed. Gas logs still use the open firebox and flue, so those repairs matter. Tell us your plan and we price the work that fits it.

FAQ

Firebox & Smoke Chamber questions

How much does firebox repair cost in Denver?

Small firebrick or joint repairs typically run $300 to $1,000, a full firebox rebuild $1,000 to $2,500, and smoke chamber parging $800 to $2,000. We price it in writing at the free inspection.

Can you use regular mortar in a firebox?

No. Firebox joints need refractory mortar made for high heat. Regular mortar cracks and washes out quickly next to a fire.

What is parging?

Parging is a heat-rated coating troweled over the inside of the smoke chamber to smooth and seal the brick. It cuts down on creosote buildup and closes gaps where heat could escape.

How long does the repair take?

Firebrick repairs are usually a half-day job. Parging or a firebox rebuild can take one to two days, plus time for the material to cure before the first fire.

Will the new brick match?

New firebrick is a lighter color at first. It darkens with use, and after a season of fires it is usually hard to tell old from new.
